Sycamore

In Sycamore we like to learn creatively
and enjoy working collaboratively

Welcome back to Sycamore Class!

We have got such an exciting term ahead of us. We are studying the Second World War as our theme which is called, 'I'm an evacuee get me out of here!' We will be using the book Goodnight Mister Tom as our class text and will have lots of opportunities to investigate what life was like as a child in WW2 Britain. We will find out how life has changed since that period of history. There will be a trip later on in the term as well as a visit from the Open Box Theatre Company.

There is also a lot of maths that we will be covering and it is a really good opportunity to build on all the good knowledge they have as well as learn new things which will help the children prepare for Year 6.

Our PE days are currently Thursday and Friday although it is helpful if they can have their kits in all week.

Homework is set on a Friday and they will usually have this in their homework books. It needs to be back in school by Wednesday so we can get it marked and ready for Friday. We also have a blog on this website which we can use to share our learning and homework.

Reading is also really important to us in Year 5 so if there are any parents who would be able to come in and hear readers then that would be amazing and please do let me know which times would be best for you.

I am sure that this will be a really positive year for the children in Sycamore Class and am very much looking forward to teaching them and seeing how much they will achieve.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me.

26th September 1941

Today we have been transported back to 1941 and have been thinking about 'Digging for Victory!' We have been planning how to dig up our school field so we can grow vegetables. Along the way we learnt about factors, multiples and prime numbers without really noticing!

4th October 2018

We have had another busy week with a very successful Class Worship on Tuesday. Thank you to all the parents who came to see it, we loved having you as an audience. We performed a play all about evacuees in World War Two and the different experiences they had. We did it really well and one of the teachers told us that we had set the bar very high for the other classes to come!

This afternoon we have a workshop with some people from the NSPCC and then an extra treat with an Activate PE lesson.

11th October 2018

This week we have created some World War Two inspired drawings based on the works of L. S. Lowry. We are hoping to create a museum next half term where we will exhibit our art pieces.

We have also been working hard at our maths this week and exploring different types of fractions. We learnt about fractions which behave like the queen and ones that behave like teenagers. Ask the children in Sycamore Class if you want to know more!
