Physical Activity

At St Matthews Primary School, we are committed to promoting physical activity among our pupils.

We pledge to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity throughout the day, which is achieved through sports leaders leading activities at playtimes and lunchtimes, games and activities at breakfast club, a wide range of after-school clubs offered, physical activity interventions, and physical activity promoted throughout school even in other subjects. Taster sessions are also available.

Our sports leaders are a group of children across Year 6 who play a very important role in PE at the school. They are responsible for promoting sporting activities at St Matthews, encouraging other children to take part in physical activity, helping staff with PESSPA events (for example, setting up equipment, score-keeping and officiating), and contributing ideas for whole-school sport events.

Sports leaders have to apply for their positions and must be able to demonstrate a commitment to PE and sport, as well as the School Games values of honesty, teamwork, self-belief, respect, passion and determination. New Sports leader from Year 5 will be trained around this term before Easter and then continue through Year 6.

Another big part of encouraging our children to be physically active is Forest School. More information can be found here.
