Intent – What do we want to achieve?

St. Matthews Primary School believes that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensuring children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and regular learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe, such as being able to swim. We also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed lifelong values. Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St. Matthews, not only through the sporting skills taught but also through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.

Implementation – What have we done?

  • PE at St Matthews School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor and adventure sports. (Forest School)
  • At St. Matthews School, we implement a progressive PE curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and skills year after year. The PE curriculum is designed to be challenging, inspiring, creative, and motivating to encourage active learning and participation. Our pupils will revisit PE skills and knowledge in order to embed and deepen their understanding. The lessons are carefully planned to ensure that all children are well supported in their learning and that opportunities for depth are planned for.
  • The long-term plan sets out the PE units that are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Mr. Harris is employed to be the PE Lead of the school, which has allowed us to review our PE curriculum by reflecting and improving it upon pupil and staff feedback and in response to Ofsted's research review for PE.
  • Pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week, covering a PE topic and doing forest school, except for summers one and two, when they have forest school, PE lessons, and Swimming for all Year groups.
  • All classes participate in a variety of activities that ensure that they are meeting the daily 30 minutes of physical activity at school. This includes forest school time within the school's woodland areas.
  • In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities inside and outside of school. At St. Matthews, children can attend after-school sport clubs four evenings per week, offering football, Boogie Shoes, multiskills, and Karate.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area within the cluster schools at Oakmoor Secondary School. This is an inclusive approach that endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Children have taken part in School games tournaments as well, taking our total number of tournaments we have taken part in to over 20 different tournaments throughout the year.
  • This had led to an 80% participation rate across the school (Yrs. 1–6) of children taking part in at least one tournament.
  • The school has achieved the gold school games mark for 2022–2023, which shows the commitment to physical activity and school sport.
  • The school has a travel tracker that the children are encouraged to take part in, which encourages and promotes a healthy lifestyle.
  • This year, 14 children in Year 6 are continuing to be Play Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunchtime games and any other Sporting activities.
  • New Play leaders (Current Year 5) will be trained around Easter this Year.
  • Children in all years (R–6) swim once a week during the Summer 1 Term. We also offer a swimming club during this term for KS2 Children.
  • Year 6 Swimming data shows that this approach has been very successful, as we had an 87% pass rate against the 3 main objectives for swimming in the national curriculum.
  • Annually, the school celebrates Sports Day to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in a wide range of inclusive, competitive activities and sports. A strong emphasis is placed on the school values of respect, friendship, achievement, and sporting ability.

Impact – What impact has it had?

When pupils leave St. Matthews, they will have an appreciation and good understanding of the benefits of a physical and healthy lifestyle and be equipped with the skills and knowledge to participate in a range of physical activities and sports. We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take ownership of their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy competitive sports outside of school from this. We equip our children with necessary sports and life skills and help them develop a love for physical activity and sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
