How can I help my child develop their understanding of phonics?

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds has their own YouTube channel on which they have videos for each lesson within the scheme. These lessons are all public and you can access using the following link. You can show the appropriate lesson to your child to help them to consolidate their learning. You will also find parent guides on how to pronounce the phonemes in each phase.

Using the links below, you will find the pronunciation guides for the sounds in phase 2 and phase 3, which are taught in Year R but consolidated in Year 1. They will tell you how to pronounce each phoneme as well as the formation rhyme used to form the sound.

In each class, we use the 'Grow the Code' phoneme mats. These support the children to make choices between which grapheme to choose when spelling words. You could print them out and place them somewhere where the children can see them regularly. You could ask the children to recall the phonemes and use them as a reference when they are doing any reading or writing at home.
