St. Matthew's Celebrate V.E. Day's 80th Anniversary
Today, the St. Matthew's community celebrated V.E. Day 80.
The children began the day, learning about V.E. Day in their classrooms and why it is important to remember this day, even though it happened 80 years ago. After that, we walked to church, where we were treated to a special service. It was a time for sharing memories of people in our local community, who were alive on this day as well as prayers, poems and songs. They then prepared for their street party by making flags, hats and decorations. During lunchtime, the whole school sat outside on the field with the tables laid out like a 'street party'. They enjoyed eating together, with 1940's music playing in the background. In the afternoon, Year 6 led the school in playing a variety of 1940's games. Finally, as parents arrived, they were treated to some fabulous country dancing by Year 6 and the whole school singing 'We'll Meet Again' by Vera Lynn and the National Anthem. It was a truly patriotic day, enjoyed by all.
